A novel hierarchical mesoporous SiO2/expanded graphite (EG) composite was synthesized through a special shaking-assistant hydrothermal method. This composite had a unique structure with combined micrometer-sized pores from the EG and nanometer-sized mesopores from the silica. Structure ordering, surface area, and morphology of this composite strongly depended on the amount of siliceous source. The SiO2/EG composite had a greatly enhanced adsorption capability (72 mg.g(-1)), fast adsorption rate, and high adsorption intensity (K-L = 2.172) for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. This work proposed a potential technique of developing composite materials and their related applications in environmental fields. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
